OLD STUFF The Edge is a made up title also. I never realized I had such a knack for making up stuff. I'm so proud. I'm thinking I painted this in 1983, but I'm not exactly sure. This piece almost got the attention of someone at Klein Gallery, or some high-falootin' Chicago art dealer as I was hitting the pavement and showing my slides to anyone who'd take a look. Good spiritual exercise, showing ones work to an impartial art dealer. Humbling. Because I only had a couple of pieces in this style at the time, and, given the fact that I was too chicken to push it, nothing came of the interest in it with the art dealer. I was obviously an idiot at that time. Note the experimentation with composition. We're talking some seriously thin subject matter to fill the plane with. It was really centered on placement in relation to the larger rectangle. Almost Zen-like in its handling. |
