OLD STUFF Gesture: Catapulting was used on a postcard announcement for a two-man show in Chicago at Stein-Bartlow gallery, showing my work and that of Robert Natkin. This is also a representation of a complete artistic transformation. Inspired by the work of an artist I had seen at an art fair, I began a journey into abstraction. The simplicity of this piece belies an awful lot of work over a period of a couple of years that went into getting the image to work. These were highly textured, all based on nature - if not overly landscapian, and feature rich jewel toned compositional objects superimposed over more muted background tones. Corporate art in the late 80's allowed me to support myself through the sale of my artwork. This style, this general imagery, was both non-confrontational, and yet still possessed some compositional integrity, they were fun to paint, and fun to look at wtihout being "funny". |
